Mr. Apirat SUGONDHABHIROM

Consul-General of Thailand

 

            Mr. Apirat Sugondhabhirom was born on 23 May, 1965. A Buddhist, he was ordained as a Buddhist monk at Wat Ratchabophit Temple in Bangkok for two months in 2009. His preceptor later became His Holiness the 20th (and current) Supreme Patriarch of Thailand.

            He is married to Dr. Waraporn Sugondhabhirom (nee Amornkraisi).

            He is an alumni of Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok), from where he graduated in 1985 with B.Pol.Sci. (Hon.) in International Relations; and of the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University (New York), with Master in International Affairs (MIA) in 1991.

            He began working in the Thai diplomatic service in 1987, having served in the Royal Thai Embassies in Beijing, Jakarta, and New Delhi, as well as the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva and various departments in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.  

            He speaks and reads Thai and English, with some knowledge in Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Bahasa Indonesia, and a bit of Hindi. He is interested to start learning Vietnamese.                    

            His hobbies include reading, writing, swimming, cooking, travelling, and learning about peoples’ cultures, ways of life, history and languages.
As an amateur writer and translator, he occasionally contributes some articles and short stories to newspapers and magazines in Thailand.
